Wendell’s phone went straight to voicemail, and his roommate, Manny Rubio, told us he hadn’t seen him for two days. I checked with Sergeant Martinez and urged him to send uniforms by Salty’s bar. By the time we made it to Beachwood Trailer Park, Sarge called back and reported that, according to coworkers, Wendell didn’t close on Tuesday night. He’d left shortly after 10 p.m. It was an easy decision to put out a BOLO for Helena’s ex-boyfriend.

The yellow Jeep was parked at the mobile home, but according to Rubio, our suspect’s mountain bike was missing. The roommate also seemed more worried about maintaining the privacy of his own room than concerned for Wendell or what he’d potentially done, so we left a uniformed deputy at the premises to keep an eye out while we ran around drumming up a warrant. Which Captain Bradley was more than happy to help push through.

We’d also asked for a deputy to visit Fatemeh at the art gallery to collect more footage from her security camera. It was another long shot, but maybe there was something else between the night of Helena’s murder and now that would be useful. This time, I agreed with Fuentes that we should submit the large quantity of recordings to our IT department for review.

Once we returned to the trailer park, the tow truck was about to haul the Jeep away. I asked them to wait a moment so I could take a quick look, but I didn’t spot any rope. Fuentes and I moved on to the house, which smelled stale, like it hadn’t been cleaned properly in years and sweaty clothes had been left lying around for weeks. We began in Chris Wendell’s room.

“This place is a mess,” my partner complained for the fourth or fifth time.

He wasn’t wrong. The only nice thing I’d spotted in the trailer so far was a guitar held in a stand and its amp in the corner of the bedroom. And the dog. A shaggy-haired mutt of some description who seemed eager to be everybody’s friend. The kind of dog who’d be perfect for me if someone else could amuse him while I wasn’t there most of the time. But then the dog would be more attached to that person than me and barely lift his head when I came home. Like a cat.

“Something’s missing,” I said, pointing to a second guitar stand with no instrument.

“Who runs away on a bicycle with a guitar on their back?” Hugo replied, shaking his head. “Sounds like a Robert Rodriguez movie.”

“I’ll have to take your word for it,” I laughed.

“El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn, Machete,” Fuentes replied. “You’ve never watched a Rodriguez movie?”

“I don’t think so. I’m more of a sci-fi, fantasy fan. For me, modern-day dramas are a mixture of rubbish that couldn’t happen and violence we see too much of on the job. At least with sci-fi, you go in knowing it’s all make-believe.”

“He directed a few of The Book of Boba Fett series,” Fuentes said.
